About PLCC

What is the Pangani Lutheran Children's Centre ?

The Pangani Lutheran Children's Centre is an organization registered under the Ministry of Social Services. The project is based at the Pangani Estate, near Pangani Girls High School, where the hostels are located. The PLCC is a Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church project started by the Women's Department of the church to help reduce the number of girls on the street.

The program was started in 1994 by the help of 2 volunteers who worked hand in hand with the church Women's Coordinator. They enrolled 13 girls in the new program. The volunteers began feeding the girls and giving them an informal education.

Currently, the centre has grown to 86 girls aged between 6 and 23 years. The children come from various parts of different Nairobi slums. However, the majority come from the Mathare and Korogocho slums. The majority of the children are orphans and some are brought up by single parents who are unemployed.

Through the help of donors the church recently bought a 5 acre plot at Ongata Rongai. This site will accommodate the girls and a school will be built for them together with other development projects for the PLCC. Currently, poultry farming is taking place at the site with about 300 chickens being raised. There is also a vegetable garden to raise fresh produce for the children. These existing projects are a way to help them raise internal funds for their day to day living.

The goal of PLCC is to improve the situation of street girls, who are admitted at the age 5 to 12 years, and help them to grow up to self-sustainable and reliable citizen of this country.

By assisting girls we hope to remove or reduce the number of families living on the street. Most of the Children's Centres concentrate on assisting boys thus leaving out the girls.
