Kenya is one of the most diverse countries in Africa. There are around 52 different communities (large and small) with their own languages and cultures. There is also a fairly large Asian and Arab and a smaller Kenyan community of European origin. |
Socially, Kenyans are known for their good hospitality. As a result of this, a number of refugees from some of the warring neighbours and some other African countries, have sought refuge in Kenya. This influx of refugees into the country, has brought with it an increased number of crime wave in the country.
Population wise, Kenya is amongst those countries with the highest growth rates in the world. The 1999 population census has put the population of Kenya at 30,000,000 (est). This high number has put a lot of pressure to the economy rendering a larger proportion of the population, to live under poverty situation. |

Economically, Kenya falls under the “third world” group. Its economy is dependent on agriculture, hence, when the agricultural performance is poor or when market prices for agricultural products fall, the performance of the economy is in the negative. For a number of years, the agricultural sector which is the back borne of the economy has been performing poorly due to prolonged droughts. In order to sustain the economy, the government introduced a cost-sharing policy whereby instead of the government paying for essential services such as education and medical, the citizens pay for them. This move has made the cost of living too expensive for the low and middle class population who are the majority. This may have a long-term effect on the socio-economic structure of the population.
