Nairobi HIV/AIDS Department Activities 2006
Over the last year the Nairobi parish HIV/AIDS Department has engaged in a number of activities to help tackle the issue of HIV/AIDS.
The department has developed three different sub-departments to more closely deal with issues. The first is counseling. Two types are offered, spiritual and general. The spiritual counseling is meant to encourage people to look to the Bible for answers and guidance. The counselors might also refer the people to a pastor for further guidance. |
The second type of counseling is general and this is a chance for people to talk about possible issues at home, domestic violence, social stigma and poverty.
Another sub-department of the parish is home based care (HBC). This is meant to teach people how to care for someone they might be treating with HIV/AIDS and how to treat themselves.
Often times the department volunteers make home visits and go with HIV/AIDS kits to treat people who are too sick to help themselves. In some cases the volunteers take the person to the hospital or talk with neighbors about giving care and support. The volunteers also talk with people about eating healthy, especially if they are taking anti-retro viral. |

The final sub-department is micro-financing. People have to opportunity to be trained in a certain skill to help improve their lives. Currently, people who have benefited from these skills have businesses making shawls, sandals, soap and many other things.
On March 10, 2006 the department traveled to Machakos to conduct a seminar on HBC. The volunteers want empower people and help them to learn to deal with their own issues and help others.
