How to start a small business workshop in Lungalunga
The Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church Women's Desk organized a workshop on how to start a small business. Pangani Lutheran Children's Centre Coordinator, Mary Mshana, led the workshop.
The main points she stressed were that people need to know how to make the money and how to use it in the best way.Mary used the Bible as an example for how to be successful.
" The Bible is like a dictionary of life." said Mary Mshana.

Some of the businesses already held by people in the parish area include: selling fish, Maasai jewelry, frying fish and selling sugar.
Mary suggested that starting small was the best method to being successful in business. By selling produces you can get locally you always have access to what you are selling. She also said it was very important that the area needed to be assessed as to what it was lacking. The audience said that sugar, tea and cornmeal were the main produces that were in demand and not very abundant.
Mary also stressed the point that it's important to know your budget. By keeping correct records you can easily find out what your profit is and see what you have to work with in the future. |

Many of the attendees said they couldn't read or write and in these cases they were told to ask their children to help them keep records. Later in the afternoon Mary asked the audience to give a typical day for a woman and a typical day for a man. By learning what a day is like for both sexes Mary learned who seems to have a stronger work ethic. While the women had a list of about eleven daily chores, the men's days didn't inv love nearly as many things. Mary stated that if the husband really loves his wife then he can't sit while she does all the work. She suggested that by looking to the Bible many questions about sharing in a marriage can be answered. |
| In closing Mary stressed the idea that people starting a new business need to be open-minded and put all your effort into the success of the business. |
