Education to street girls

The main goal of this department is to educate the girls up to a level they can reach. Our social workers acquire girls of the ages of six to twelve and bring them to the project. They then undergo rehabilitation for a period of one year. During this time the girls are educated informally for twelve months to determine what they know. Later they are enrolled in either nursery or primary school depending on their age and level of education.
The department seeks schools for the girls and does the following activities:

  • Having one on one talks to counsel and guide the children regarding issues affecting them academically and socially
  • Establishing good relationships with the relevant institutions, educating girls by making contact with the teachers and school administration.
  • Making sure that the children get a basic knowledge of Christian faith through morning devotions and Bible Study Week.
  • Educating the girls on personal hygiene and the importance of good grooming.
  • Making contact with parents to discuss progress.

Josephine Munini
PLCC Social Worker

Josephine Munini is a social worker for Pangani Lutheran Children's Center. An important part of her job is to find new girls that might need the support of PLCC

January through April marks the beginning of a new intake of girls. Josephine will travel to different parts of the city looking for street girls that need support. Many people might think that the process of getting girls into the Pangani Lutheran Children's Centre is simple, however, there are many complex issues that often need to be dealt with before the girls are enrolled. One of Josephine's first steps is to visit the slums and introduce herself to a specific girl who might be a good fit for the program. After a friendship is formed Josephine then tells the girls what she does for a living and about the program.

Many times the girls are members of street families or gangs. In these cases adults protect the girls in exchange for contributions to the "family". If the girls do have guardians like this, then Josephine invites them to PLCC to show the centre and discuss the benefits of the program.

This entire process can often times take two to four months. For the girls with guardians, consent must be given and many times PLCC workers have to convince the guardians that this the best thing for the girls.

Once the girls are enrolled the program tailors to their needs. Many times girls don't have safe places to live. In these cases they are given the option to live in Pangani House. Other times arrangements are made for those girls who have shelter but need meals.

Ultimately, Josephine hopes to see the girls she enrolls succeed in the program and eventually go for further education.

Great Education Improvement

The period of November 2002 to March 2003 had its landmark. One of this was the improvement in the academic performance of some of the children compared to the previous term’s report. For example, two of our girls, i.e. Joyce and Beatrice did well in the Kenya certificate of primary education and managed to secure form one positions in Senior Chief Koinange and Banana Hills Secondary Schools respectively.
