The main areas of concern of work may be categorized under two main groups:

  1. The Urban – Nairobi, Mombasa and Malindi.
  2. The Rural Areas.

1.Urban Work

The cities of Nairobi and Mombasa call for programmes that are geared towards reaching the educated and working class, also, the unemployed.

  • NAIROBI

Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, has an estimated population of 3,000,000 according to the 1989 census.  This high number in population has been aggravated by the high rural – urban migration which has been due to a number of factors such as hope for a better life than is in the rural areas, looking for employment which can not be found in the rural, running away from the harsh life or getting attracted by the many facilities available in the city.In the city, they do not find or get what they came looking for and in the absence of income to enable them live in or hire good houses, they end up in the slums.  Most of the people who live in the slums, take to drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution and other unacceptable social activities as a consolation.  These are some of the problems churches in Nairobi have to face.

  • MOMBASA

Mombasa the second largest city in Kenya, has an estimated population of 1,500,000 according to the 1989 census.  The challenge of this town which is a gate-way to Kenya at the Coast of the Indian Ocean, has been a challenge to our Church too.  The rapid expansion of industries has been attracting many people from the country side thus, forcing the population to grow fast.

  • MALINDI

About 115 Km. North of Mombasa, we find the town of Malindi which is an attractive tourist place.  Due to the tourist factor, many young men and women move from the rural areas to the town.  Drug addiction alcoholism, prostitution and other unacceptable social activities are vivid in this town.

  • Work In the Rural Areas

Rural areas refers to the country side.  Here, we are referring to work outside the big towns already named above. The work in these areas and in particular the mission areas calls for real evangelistic work while making provisions for social services such as education, health, etc.

The parishes in the rural areas, despite the many problems they face which differ from one parish to another, they have been expanding at a faster rate compared to the parishes in the urban areas.  Poverty is the main problem.

The church has a number of programmes through which it renders services to its members and the general public to combat the problem listed above.
