KELC PARTICIPANTS CONCLUDE AN INTENSIVE VCT TRAINING IN NAIROBI.
From 4th - 29th September, 2006 participants from Malindi, Lunga Lunga, Voi, Tana River and Nairobi parishes and mission areas attended a month intensive VCT training conducted by Kenyatta National Hospital.
Qualified trainees were shortlisted by the HIV/AIDS department prior to the training.Region and gender creteria were used.The VCT training is phase I of KELC HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention plan geared towards the establishment of KELC VCT centers in the geographical areas the church operates. This plan is also aimed at supplimenting other efforts and to to reach out to areas that have few or lack completely VCT services.

During the four weeks training, participants were taken through the following topics:epidemiological trends of HIV/AIDS, empowered on information for prevention, trained on management of HIV/AIDS, Counselling skills and psychoanalytic theories, behaviour change, VCT protocol, risk reduction options, loss and grief, community mobilization, quality assurance, VCT book keeping and blood harvesting.

HIV SEMINAR
|
On the last week of the training, all the participants did their practicum at Kenyatta National Hospital VCT site before gratuating on the 24th September, 2006 at a colourful ceremony attended by senior KNH personnel. The KELC HIV/AIDS department was fully represented at the training with programs Co-ordinator: Mr. Wilfred Otene, Technical Officer:Mr.Ken Mwaura and Field Officer: Mr. George Arende.

KELC VCT advocacy has been on a low key mainly due to lack / inadequate VCT sites in the geographical areas that church operates. Many of our congregants are forced to walk long distances to access VCT services and know their status.
