KELC / ELCK YOUTHS JOIN FOR FUN AND WORSHIP.

On 12 th December each year, Kenyans commemorate Independence Day. This year's celebrations were different in many ways, KELC/ ELCK youths met to have fun and worship together at Nairobi 's NURU Media Ministry grounds. The activities were full of joy and jubilations as youths {currently on school holidays} danced and sang.

Ms. Wanjungu from Magenta training Institute gave a talk on ‘career development'. She started by underlining the fact that many youths have difficulty in choosing the right career which match there interests. She cautioned the youths against getting married early before establishing a life time career, saying that once married other responsibilities crop-up denying opportunity to further careers. Ms. Wanjungu who has done several courses including catering, business administration- advised the youth to choose careers such as mass communication, photography, catering among others; that ensure prospects of self employment. The youth talk on career development came at a time that many youths in Kenya are faced with un-employment due to wrong career choices, choosing non-marketable careers and lack scholarships.

As part of Wanjungu talk she defined SMART as criteria to be used by youths on choosing career.

  • S- Self-employment.
  • M- Marketability.
  • A- Academic capability.
  • R- Realistic focus {considering available resources/ credibility}.
  • T- Talent / Interest.

She went further to encourage youths with lower academic qualifications not to give up in life but instead have hope by aiming at the sky. ‘Knowledge is power'- Ms. Wanjungu stressed to the youths; adding that life is neither easy nor smooth but can be, through sheer hard work. When asked by youths what future one had after dropping from Secondary school? Ms. Wanjungu advised such youths to embark on building their skills since all depended on their will to make a difference in their lives. She concluded her talk by telling the youths –‘your life is in your hands- you either choose to make it or break it'.

KELC/ ELCK youth network was established in December, 2005; with a vision to Unite ‘Lutheran Youths', worship and hold joint activities. The youths hold monthly evangelism/ prayer meetings which rotate to all Nairobi congregations.
